I'm such of a fan of Michael Mann. He rules. Peri-fucking-od. I quote my friend after he saw The Insider "I bowed down to the screen." Perfectly put. He is a masterful director. The performances he gets from actors are incredible. Russell Crowe shouldn't have won an Oscar for Gladiator. He should've won for The Insider. Mann put De Niro and Pacino across from each for the first time in a scene. Go back and watch it. It's brilliant. There is always an intensity to his camerawork. It crackles. It's visceral. He uses handheld the way it should be used. He crosses the line in the middle of a take but when he cuts to the reverse angle it has crossed the line too. Everything is so well planned yet feels so organic and real. His use of music is inspiring, yet he understands when to drop the music and audio altogether. The last 15 minutes of The Last of the Mohicans and the bank robery/shootout in Heat are some of the best scenes ever put to film. I learn a lot from his films, and his dvd commentaries. Plus we share the same birthday. I don't know that I could pick a favorite, although it would probably be The Insider, which I think is his masterpiece. So far. Thoughts?

The Insider was an incredible movie! Very edge of your seat, intense stuff. I would love to revisit it after reading your post now, wow you really describe things with such intensity and passion- I need to see more of your work! If you put 1/2 of that passion for detail you observe and write about, then yikes!!

Never say never! Seriously man, I am sure all the greats never thought they would be where they are today.
Wow, I just watch movies and enjoy what I see on screen. You have the ability to analyze what the director has done with the movie. You probably have a greater appreciation for good movies then the rest of us.
I guess I take all that stuff for granted when I watch a movie. I think people who truly understand what makes something great enjoy it more.
With your details about the insider I will have to watch it again with those details in mind. I might enjoy a great movie even more!
sometimes ti gets in the way because I find myself paying attention to something other than the story. but if it's that well made and I'm truly engrossed it'll be a 2nd viewing that pulls out all the specifics.

probably boogie nights- I saw it in the theater 7 or 8 times and I've watched the directors commentary more times than most people will watch a movie. jaws I've seen alot anyway, but I worked at a video store in high school and they got a laser disc player and I used to put it in all the time. also I've literally watched goodfellas twice in a row. I was with friends who love it too and when it was over we rewound it and watched it again. oh and true romance I've seen alot. a real lot. couldn't give you an exact number on any of these but it's embarrassingly high.
wow, what a random assortment of movies! I love it. And yet, I am sure it is not random at all...I am sure you can link them and why they appeal to you in a very witty post. Unless you have already and I just wasn't paying attention. Entirely possible
I am a big Star Wars fan! I don't even know how many times I have seen ALL of them!
Tommy Boy is a movie I could over watch again just after it ended. I do not know why but it gets funnier every time I see it!
